Associate Lecturer / PBL Tutor / Personal Advisor / Public law team
I went to Emmanuel College, Cambridge from 1982-85 where I studied and graduated in law. After completing my Law Society Finals course in Nottingham in 1986, I travelled for six months in the Far East before starting my training contract with Norton Rose (now Norton Rose Fullbright) in March 1987. On qualification and admittance as a solicitor in 1989, I stayed at Norton Rose until 1997 when I moved to Singapore.
As a solicitor, I was a member of the shipping and commercial litigation department engaged in a wide range of commercial disputes, focusing on financial services and wider regulatory matters in later years. I spent 15 months on secondment in 1995-96 with the Securities & Investments Board (SIB) which has developed into today’s Financial Conduct Authority.
I took a career break when my children were young and kept myself busy (aside from caring for three children!) with a variety of community roles, including work as a generalist adviser for the Citizens’ Advice Bureau, before deciding to pursue a second career in higher education. I am no longer a practising solicitor.
I worked as a tutor for BPP Law School in Leeds from 2009 – 2022, teaching mainly on the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and its successor, the Post Graduate Diploma in Law (PGDL), including supervision of LLM projects. My main areas of teaching as a lecturer and
tutor were public law, European law and the law of tort, although I taught company law options on the Bar Training Course and on the LLB. While at BPP, I completed the Post Graduate Certificate in Professional & Higher Education (PGCPHE) between 2016-2019, becoming a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority (now Advance HE) in 2019.
I have been a tutor at York Law School since January 2023 where I am an associate lecturer and personal advisor. My role as a tutor includes facilitating learning in the PBL core foundational subjects, advanced legal skills and year 3 commercial case study option, as
well as dissertation supervision. As a member of the public law team, my role includes updating of materials and delivery of plenaries.
