Biography

Dr Himani Bhakuni

Lecturer

I am a Lecturer in Law at York Law School. I joined York in April 2022 after spending some time in the Netherlands at the Utrecht Medical Centre, Utrecht University (as Assistant Professor of Justice in Global Health Research) and Maastricht University (as Lecturer).   

I have previously served as a judicial clerk to a High Court Judge and spent some time as a litigator in India. I’ve also provided research support and consultancy to several human rights organisations and NGOs.

My research largely sits within Health Law and Society and cuts across the disciplines of Human Rights, Health Law, Bioethics, Global Health, and Global Justice.

Overview

I conduct individual and collaborative research on the following topics:

  • Epistemic Injustice and Knowledge-related Wrongs
  • Health Rights and Ecological Justice
  • Reproductive Justice
  • Biomedical Research Ethics (primarily Informed Consent) and Health Data Ethics 
  • Global Health Justice
  • Global Health Law

I am currently leading the Politics of Disease Framing Project which aims to explore, both theoretically and through testimonies of people with lived experiences, the processes behind different framings of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).

My upcoming individual projects include: 

  • Epistemic Rights as Dignitary Rights
  • The Role of Law in Combating Unhealthy Diets and a Lack of Physical Activity  
  • Profiteering: A Public Health Tragedy
