Biography

Dr Eppie Leishman

BA (Hons), MRes, PhD (Social Policy, The University of York)

I am a Social Care researcher at the University of York. I have worked on a range of social care research projects including the intersections of support and housing for people with learning disabilities, values based home-care recruitment and evaluations of specialist training for care and support workers. I joined the Administrative Fairness Lab in the Law School in 2024 to work on a project considering the ‘fairness’ of Adult Social Care Needs Assessments.

I am a qualitative researcher with a particular interest in coproduction and public involvement in research. Prior to joining the Law School, I held roles as an associate lecturer, research associate and latterly as an impact fellow in the School for Business and Society. I have a keen interest in widening participation and have previously run outreach courses with the Centre for Lifelong Learning.

Research

Overview

I am currently leading in-depth case studies of the approaches of 5 local authorities in England to Adult Social Care Needs Assessments. Our project aims to understand what social care users consider to be ‘fair’ needs assessment processes, and to make recommendations of any changes to needs assessment practices.

I am also convening our Experts by Experience Group who are members of the public with expertise on needs assessments either in a personal capacity or as a carer.
