Biography

Ben joined the department in 2024 as a Lecturer in Forensic Speech Science. His research interests are across forensic phonetics, discourse-pragmatic variation and change, and sociolinguistics. He has published work which investigates the viability of using the phonetics of discourse-pragmatic markers (specifically like, yeah and just) as speaker discriminants, and phonetic analyses of words against discourse-pragmatic and phonological factors. Prior to the present role, Ben undertook his PhD in Linguistics at York, and worked as a Research Associate on various sociolinguistic and phonetic projects.
