LLS Alumni Event 2024

On Thursday 8th February 2024 the Department of Language and Linguistic Science will host its annual Alumni Event ‘What can you do with a degree in Language and Linguistics?’. 

Many different career paths are open to language and linguistics graduates…and to prove it, the department of LLS is inviting some alumni back to York! The speakers will share their experience of what they've been up to since graduation and how their degree has helped them shape their current career paths.

This year’s guest speakers are:

Jolie Mackereth (2020 BA in English Language and Linguistics), now Producer at BBC Radio 6 Music

Jolie Mackereth graduated from the University of York in 2020 with a BA in English Language and Linguistics, and is now a Producer / Assistant Producer for BBC Radio 6 Music. Since graduation, Jolie has developed a range of experience working in different roles for radio stations across the North of England

Kwame Boateng Sekyere (2016 BA Linguistics) now Barrister and Entrepreneur

Kwame Boateng Sekyere graduated from the University of York in 2016 with a degree in Linguistics, and has since worked in a range of roles, many of which relate to the justice sector. He is now a Barrister at Foundry Chambers, having received his Call to the Bar in 2021. Kwame also has significant entrepreneurial experience, having set up his own production company, think tank, and humanitarian careers advice service.

Rosie Walsh (2014 BA in Philosophy and French) now Senior Consultant at EY Seren

Rosie Walsh graduated from the University of York in 2014 with a degree in Philosophy and French, and now works as a Senior Consultant at EY Seren. Rosie has experience working in UX (user experience) and web design, and before that she also worked with Teach First as a teacher (and later as Deputy Head of Department) of Modern Foreign Languages.

Andrew Piper (2002 BA in English Language and Linguistics) now Chief Information Security Officer at Barclays

Andrew Piper graduated from the University of York in 2002 with a BA in English Language and Linguistics, and now works as Chief Information Security Officer at Barclays. He has over fifteen years of experience working in the field of enterprise risk management, focusing specifically on the Financial Services sector.

Come along to the event to chat with our panel of invited speakers, who are all University of York alumni (Language and Linguistic Science) and who cover a range of experience and career journeys. The event is open to all students and alumni of the Department, from any year or degree.
