On Friday 9th February 2024 the Department of Language and Linguistic Science will host the event ‘Careers and PG Studies in Translation and Interpreting’. This event aims at providing students with information about career paths in the language services industry and will include a presentation of our new MA in Interpreting, Translation and Applied Technologies.
This follows on from our yearly LLS Alumni Event ‘What can you do with a degree in Language and Linguistics?’, which will take place on Thursday 8th February 2024.
Programme
15.05 Dr Eloísa Monteoliva García, Director of Professional Language Training at LLS, will open and chair the event.
15.10 Kirsty Mews, Careers Consultant for Arts and Humanities at the Careers and Placements Team, will provide general information and advice on PG study around matters including available support, entry requirements, information to consider when considering and choosing further study, writing a personal statement, financial aspects, as well as individual aspirations.
15.30 Marilena Iannidinardi, Deputy Head of the English and Irish Interpretation Unit at the Directorate General for Interpretation of the European Commission (SCIC), will talk about conference interpreting as a profession and the role interpreters play in the EU institutions.
16.00 Ramón Inglada, Assistant Professor in Translation and Applied Technologies at Heriot-Watt University, Convenor of ITI ScotNet (the Scottish Network of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting) and freelance translator, will focus on career opportunities in translation, the role of technologies in the language services industry and about professional associations in translation and interpreting.
16.30 Dr Gustavo Góngora Goloubintseff & Nathaniel Elcock, Co-Programme Leaders of the new MA in Interpreting, Translation and Applied Technologies at the University of York, will present the programme, its philosophy, structure, entry requirements and admissions process, and will be available to answer questions from the audience.
Come along to the event to chat with our panel of invited speakers to find out about careers in translation and interpreting, and for information about postgraduate studies in this field. We encourage students to register their interest in attending the event using this form.
The event is open to all students of the LLS department and from other departments from any year or degree but in particular Languages students in their Final Year.
