Thursday 23 February 2023, 6.00PM to 8:00 PM
This event is organised by the ‘Tertulia de Literatura y Cine’ series run by María Muradás-Taylor (Lecturer in Spanish) at the Department of Language and Linguistic Science. During the Tertulia, participants take part in a guided discussion in Spanish about social, historical and political aspects of the Spanish speaking world through literature and films, with the occasional guest speaker. Each event starts off with a reading session (short stories or poetry) or the viewing of a film in Spanish language. It then comes to a close with a tutor-led audience interaction aimed to stimulate a discussion on the historical, political and social realities linked to the stories.
This month, in celebration of LGBTQ+ History Month at University of York, Tertulia de Literatura y Cine will be showing a film in Spanish directed by Aranxa Echeverria titled Carmen y Lola. After the viewing we will hold a short discussion in English about the film and LGBTQ+ rights in Spain. The discussion will be done in English in order to include more people who might decide to come to the viewing of the film.
Carmen y Lola
Carmen lives in a gypsy community in the suburbs of Madrid. Like every other woman she has ever met, she is destined to live a life that is repeated generation after generation: getting married and raising as many children as possible. However, one day she meets Lola, an uncommon gypsy girl who dreams about going to university, draws bird graffiti and likes girls. Carmen quickly develops a complicity with Lola and discovers a world that, inevitably, leads them to be rejected by their families.
