Timing evidence for the nature of phonological representations and speech production planning

Thursday 19 October 2023, 3.00PM

Speaker(s): Alice Turk (University of Edinburgh)

On Thursday 19th October, Alice Turk (University of Edinburgh) will present research on "Timing evidence for the nature of phonological representations and speech production planning"

Talk: Timing evidence for the nature of phonological representations and speech production planning
In this talk I will discuss fundamental differences in models of speech sound production that relate to 1) differences in theories of phonological representation and 2) differences in theories of the relationship between phonological representation and surface sound production.
I will present evidence from studies of speech timing behaviour which supports models of speech production with three processing components: 1) Phonological Planning, 2) Phonetic Planning, and 3) Motor-Sensory Implementation. This evidence supports symbolic phonological representations, phonology-extrinsic timekeeping processes and spatial goals that correspond to particular parts of movement.

The talk will take place at 3pm, and there will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end. There will also be an informal wine reception afterwards in the Department of Language and Linguistic Science (Deborah Hines Room, 2nd floor). Everyone is welcome!
