Speaker(s): Islam Youssef (University of South-Eastern Norway)
On Monday 30th January 2023, Islam Youssef (University of South-Eastern Norway) will be presenting on "rhotics in three Arabic dialects".
Talk: Same phonetics, different phonology: Rhotics in three Arabic dialects
This talk aims to establish the underlying R phonemes and their contextually conditioned allophones in three different varieties of spoken Arabic. The examination of phonological evidence reveals three patternings of R phonemes, which are analyzed using a minimalist model of feature geometry. The analysis confirms that phonetic criteria are not sufficient to determine representations, and in so doing provides evidence for phonetics-phonology mismatches.
The talk will take place at 3pm, and there will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end. Everyone is welcome!
