On Friday 28 April 2023 the Department of Language and Linguistic Science will host its annual Alumni Event ‘What can you do with a degree in Language and Linguistics?’.
Many different career paths are open to language and linguistics graduates…and to prove it, the department of LLS is inviting some alumni back to York! The speakers will share their experience of what they've been up to since graduation and how their degree has helped them shape their current career paths.
This year’s guest speakers are:
Maria Harrison (2019 BA French and Spanish with a year abroad), now a Social & Digital Marketing Manager at Momentum Worldwide
Maria Harrison graduated from the University of York in 2019 with a BA in French, Spanish and Linguistics. Maria is currently a Social & Digital Marketing Manager for Global Experiential Agency, Momentum Worldwide, where she leads the global social media platforms, reporting into the Global SVP Director of Marketing Communications. Maria also has experience working with and launching global campaigns for some of the top key players in the health & beauty sector, including Burt's Bees and Nestlé.
Emily Robinson (2017 BA French and Spanish with a year abroad), previously Content Creator and now a Trainee Teacher
Emily Robinson graduated from the University of York in 2017 with a BA in French and Spanish. Emily is currently completing her PGCE with Newcastle University, working with students in Key Stages 3, 4, and 5, and is preparing to start a new role as a French and Spanish teacher in September. She has previously worked in digital content and communications and has spent time working in central and local government and in several universities including UCL, York and West London.
Scott Wellington (2012 BA English Language and Linguistics), previously a Speech Scientist at SpeakUnique and now a PhD researcher in Speech and Language Processing
Graduating from the University of York in 2012 with a degree in English Language and Linguistics, Scott works within the fields of natural language processing, speech recognition and speech synthesis. He was most recently employed as a Speech Scientist at the Edinburgh-based company SpeakUnique, working to develop personalised synthetic voices for people with impaired or total loss of speech. He is now partnered with SpeakUnique as he completes his industry-supported PhD in automatic speech recognition from neural signals. Scott will talk about his journey from Linguistics to Computational Linguistics, and how his degree from the University of York gave him the skills and knowledge to pursue a career in the tech industry, working within speech and language processing.
Come along to the event to chat with our panel of invited speakers, who are all University of York alumni (Language and Linguistic Science) and who cover a range of experience and career journeys. We encourage students to register their interest in attending the event using this form.
The event is open to all students and alumni of the Department, from any year or degree.
