Careers Event: Speech and Language Therapy

Monday 17 April 2023, 5.00PM to 7:00pm

On 17th April 2023 the Department of Language and Linguistic Science will run a Careers Event for students interested in Speech and Language Therapy.

Are you thinking of a career in Speech & Language Therapy?

Speech & Language Therapists (SLTs) help children and adults who have difficulties with communication and/or eating, drinking and swallowing. They work in a wide range of settings including health centres, hospitals, mainstream and special schools, clients’ homes, courtrooms, prisons and young offenders’ institutes. SLTs work with a wide range of people, of all ages, including those with learning difficulties, cleft palate, stammering, voice disorders, head/neck/throat cancers, physical disabilities, neurological impairments and mental health difficulties.

The event will feature three invited LLS alumni speakers, all of whom were graduates from the past 10 years, who will return to York to talk with current students about this rewarding line of work.

Speakers:

Lisa Roberts, Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist, provides assessment and therapy to pre-school and school-aged children with speech, language and communication needs, some of which are complex and changing over time. Lisa also provides training and support to families, nurseries, schools and other health professionals (e.g. OTs, Physios, School Nurses etc) working with the child. Trained to be SLT by completing masters at Sheffield. Prior to this, graduated from York with MSc in Forensic Speech Science, and PhD in 2014.

Sally Deacon, mainstream schools Speech and Language Therapist working in Islington, in both primary and secondary schools. Recently graduated from the MSc in Speech and Language Sciences at University College London. Graduated from York in 2020 with BA English Language and Linguistics (with Placement Year).

Taylor Atkinson, currently studying on the MSc Speech and Language Therapy programme at Leeds Beckett University. Taylor has undertaken a variety of paediatric and adult clinical placements, which have enabled her to see the positive impact that speech and language therapists can have on their clients. Graduated from York in 2022 with BA English Language and Linguistics (with Placement Year).

In the Q&A session, the three invited speakers will cover a range of topics, including the best and most challenging aspects of an SLT role, tips on applying for Masters programmes, and how useful their degree was in preparing them for this career.

Location: The Tree House (Room BS/104 in the Berrick Saul Building)
