The Department of Language and Linguistic Science is delighted to announce a new addition to its series of Languages for Specific Purposes short courses as part of its Languages for All programme.
These courses are open to everyone - students, university staff and the general public and run for 8 weeks over one university term (except for Arabic for Medievalists). They are bespoke courses designed to develop discipline-specific language skills and cultural knowledge.
The Languages for Specific Purposes short courses offered in Autumn 2022-2023 are:
French at Work (Brand new for 2022-2023!)
This course is designed for students with an intermediate knowledge of French who want to develop their vocational language competences and their intercultural communication skills to successfully navigate a range of professional interactions in the French-speaking world of work.
Business and Management concepts in Spanish
This course will enable students with an intermediate knowledge of Spanish to develop their language and intercultural communication skills in the areas of business and management. Through the study of authentic materials applied to real-life scenarios, students will gain the confidence to successfully navigate a wide range of professional interactions in Spain and Latin American countries.
The aim of the Arabic for Medievalists module is to introduce complete beginners, or those
with only a little experience, to the fundamentals of Standard Arabic. It aims to enable students to enhance their writing and reading skills, grammar, and to raise their awareness about related key cultural aspects.
Languages for Musicians (Italian or German language)
The main emphasis of the course is the development of music-related language skills, including appropriate diction and phonetics. Libretti, songs and audio-visual material are used as a source for language exercises as well as reading and speaking activities.
Get an opportunity to practise your skills at reading, transcribing, editing and translating medieval documents such as wills, charters and land grants. The course is particularly relevant to absolute beginners with no knowledge of Latin who have an interest in ancient texts.
Languages for Special Purposes courses run subject to demand.
