New Department Community Coordinator

UG student appointed as new LLS DDC to help to foster a learning community and promote exciting opportunities and events

The Department of Language and Linguistic Science is delighted to announce the appointment of Emily Shepherdson (UG student, Linguistics with Italian) as our new Department Community Coordinator (DCC).

The DCC role is a new, central university project launched in the spring term 2021. It aims to increase communication between the wider university, departments, staff and students and to bolster the learning community by:

Encouraging engagement in community networks
Organising and promoting events within the department
Supporting current student communities in the department and helping build new ones
Advertising other university services

Emily will be working with our Department to improve our channels of communication, support our learning community and develop new student-centered initiatives. In her role, Emily will also be collaborating with other DCC across the university with the aim to organise never before seen university-wide events.

“This term is when we have finally been able to move to in person lectures and seminars as restrictions begin to ease. This is a first for so many of us who began our university experience online, and so it can be quite daunting to suddenly be in a room of people who are only familiar from a small Zoom window. This year, I want to bring back the true university experience and give everyone the opportunity to re-engage and really get to know each other in the LLS department. I will be working with the department, as well as the wonderful societies rooted in LLS and our amazing student reps to encourage engagement in LLS events, socials and initiatives to rebuild our community. Accessibility is such a priority for me so look out for updates on a range of events and opportunities for everyone to get involved with.” - Emily Shepherdson, Department of Language and Linguistic Science
