The Department of Language and Linguistic Science is thrilled to announce that our doctoral researchers, Rui Qi Choo and Justin Lo, placed second and third respectively in the finals of Three Minute Thesis 2020 competition. In the event, PhD students across the university had just 3 minutes to explain how their ideas are expanding knowledge & understanding of our world and beyond.
Big congratulations to both Rui Qi and Justin for their splendid performance at the competition!
This is what our winners have to say about their experience:
Justin Lo: "3MT has been a challenging experience that I've really enjoyed: Distilling my research into 3 minutes was much harder than I imagined, but it was very rewarding to be able to demystify a highly specialist area and engage with a wide audience. I'm very glad to have the opportunity to introduce everyone to my research and to get them excited about the world of forensic phonetics."
Rui Qi: "I had been eyeing this competition for 2 years, since year 1 of PhD. I'm very happy to have fulfilled this dream. I am also very glad that both Linguistics representatives were placed! Learning to deliver maximum impact in minimal time has been challenging; getting the opportunity to communicate big ideas on how children learn language with simple words has been very rewarding. I would also like to thank everyone who helped shape our presentations and made the 3MT event a success."
