A Conversation piece on Art and Memory

“The Art of Losing” by Alice Zeniter, the granddaughter of a Harki*, recently won the Students’ Goncourt prize for its portrait of a family caught on the wrong side of history. The article shows how Michel Talata, a Harki’s son, used art (a children’s illustrated storybook and a contemporary artwork exhibition) not to lose the memory of his ancestors. His textual and pictorial works are narratives of both filiation and reconciliation.
*The Harkis are the Algerians who fought with, rather than for, the French army during the Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962).
