Since 2008, the Richard M. Hogg Prize has been awarded annually by the International Society for the Linguistics of English (ISLE) to early-career scholars who submit research papers in any area of English language or English linguistics. Rebecca Woods, who received her PhD from the department in 2016 and is now Senior Lecturer in Language Acquisition at the University of Huddersfield, wrote her paper on the syntax of 'please'. Congratulations Rebecca! This is the second Hogg Prize to be awarded to a scholar with a close connection to the department: Márton Sóskuthy won the prize in 2010, with his paper on analogy in the emergence of intrusive-r in English.
