Excellence in learning and teaching recognised

The Department's commitment to the quality of our teaching was reflected in the recent success of Angela O'Flaherty, who was voted 'Teacher of the Year' in the YUSU annual Teaching Excellence awards, voted for by students. One student commented:
"It is particularly Angela's encouraging and humorous nature that makes her lessons so enjoyable, inspiring us to improve."
Congratulations and well done, Angela!
Other teaching staff from the Department of Language and Linguistic Science contributed to three separate sessions of the recent University of York Learning and Teaching Conference, held on 10 June 2015:
- Teachers of German (Thomas Jochum-Critchley and Nadine Saupe), Italian (Cinzia Bacilieri) and Spanish (María Muradás-Taylor) presented a workshop on the multi-level approaches used to provide support to students studying a language ab initio ('from scratch'). These support mechanisms allow us to retain our strong commitment to target language teaching, even with ab initio students.
- Cathy Dantec, our Language Degree Programme Coordinator, co-presented a workshop on innovative methods of providing feedback on formative work (i.e. work which does not 'count' towards the module grade).
- Finally, one of our 'Postgraduates Who Teach', Saudi Sadiq, presented a paper at the lunchtime poster session of the conference on his innovative use of the 'muddiest point' technique, which invites students to identify which parts of a seminar or lecture are still unclear to them at the end, to provide a quick but clear focus for further discussion and future activities. Saudi was selected to present at the conference after successful completion of the University of York's HEA-accredited 'Learning and Teaching Award' training programme for PhD students who teach alongside their studies.
The conference itself was hosted by Sam Hellmuth of our Department, in her role as Chair of the University of York Learning and Teaching Forum.
