Fête du Français at Acomb Primary School

Posted on 17 December 2014

Final-year French students organised a festive FĂȘte du Français at Acomb Primary School to promote language learning in primary schools.

On the 9th of December, final-year French students (Valarie Arogundade, Rebecca Blacknell, Richard Hadfield, Chris Houlgate, Jenny Lloyd, Rebekah Pendlebury and Alex Slingsby), brought the French language and Christmas cheer to Acomb Primary School. In this outreach event which developed out of the White Rose Network for the Interdisciplinary Study of Language Learning, students designed a morning of activities en francais to promote language teaching and learning in primary schools. 58 pupils from Years 5 and 6 participated in this Fête du Français. Through the medium of French, pupils learned how to make pop-up Christmas cards and played games such as 'Jacques a dit' and 'La salade de fruits'. They also participated in a competition to build an Eiffel tower out of marshmallows and spaghetti. The competition was presided over by Monsieur Gustave Eiffel himself, who awarded prizes to the best builders, best engineers and best teamplayers. Finally, the pupils learnt a Christmas song and the Fête finished with a rousing rendition of "Vive le vent". We would like to thank all the staff at Acomb primary school for making us feel so welcome and for allowing us to share our passion for languages with their pupils. We look forward to working again with this new generation of language-learners.‌
