Postgraduates in all fields of linguistics gathered in York on 6th September for the inaugural PARLAY (Postgraduate Academic Researchers in Linguistics At York) conference, organised by our PhD students. Delegates travelled from as far as Tunisia, Russia and Brazil to join us for a day of engaging presentations, stimulating discussion and delicious "fat rascals". The guest lectures by Francis Nolan (Cambridge) and Sam Hellmuth (York) were thoroughly enjoyed by all attendees.
Presentations covered a wide scope of topics, from the evolving use of short cuts in text messages, to clusters in Tripolitanian Libyan Arabic, to contemporary palatalization in English. Despite the inclement weather the day was a great success, providing an excellent setting for all the participants to mingle and share ideas, fuelled by a slap-up Yorkshire lunch.
Preparations for PARLAY 2014 will be getting underway shortly – visit the conference website at http://parlayconference.blogspot.co.uk for further information.
