Aims

Aims

The aim of the module is to introduce the students to teaching English as a foreign language, covering:

  • Background topics, including English as a world language, world Englishes and the history of TEFL from 1880 to present
  • Approaches to language learning used in TEFL, including theories of language acquisition, sociocultural aspects of and psychological approaches

Contact hours

One two-hour lecture and one hour-long seminar per week.

Teaching programme

The module covers:

  • The political controversies arising from English as a world language, including language death, linguistic imperialism
  • World Englishes: which model(s) of English are/should be taught?
  • The history of TEFL from 1880 to present
  • Models of language learning
  • Theories of language acquisition
  • Sociocultural considerations in the EFL classroom
  • Psychological approaches to language learning

Feedback on formative work

  • Formative exercises to be assigned during the teaching period.
  • Feedback will be provided within two weeks of submission.

Summative assessment and feedback

  • Closed examination in Summer Term Weeks 5-7
  • Mark on University scale available by the end of the summer term. Sight of examination scripts by appointment by the end of the summer term.
