Welcome, or welcome back, to the University of York. The IT support team are here to help you with any IT related questions or problems during your time at the University.
September arrivals weekend
IT Help Points will be available on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 September, 12 noon - 6pm in:
- the JB Morrell Library Foyer on Campus West
- the Piazza Foyer on Campus East
Our team will be on hand to answer questions and help you to connect your devices to the University network.

You can also visit us in the JB Morrell Library. We will be offering walk-in IT support Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm for Freshers week (18-22 Sep) and Teaching week 1 (25-29 Sep).
If there is ever a problem with IT services we want to let you know that things aren’t running as expected. Visit the IT status page or follow us on social media for information on any disruption to services or planned maintenance.

Where can I read online IT advice?
Our website has lots of useful help and information. If you are new to the University, start with reading our introduction to IT Services. Guidance on the University’s main Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), Replay lecture capture service, eAccessibility tools, and other online teaching and learning systems can be found on the Learning Technology Practical Skills Guide. How do I connect my device to the University network?
You can connect your desktop, laptop, phone or tablet to the University network:
Can I connect my games console or smart devices?
Certain games consoles and specific smart devices can connect to our ‘mydevices’ network on campus, although some features may be limited.
Can I install Microsoft 365 for free?
Yes! You can install Microsoft 365 (formerly known as Office) for free and use the apps on up to five devices. The subscription remains valid as long as you are a student at the University of York.
Can I install any other software or buy IT equipment at a discounted rate?
Yes, as a student you can download some software at a discounted rate or for free.

Can I borrow a laptop?
Yes, we have laptops available for short term use on campus or longer loans for up to a week. Guidance on requesting a laptop loan.
Do you provide any resources for improving IT skills?
The Skills Guides provide online tutorials and guidance on using a range of applications. You can also book a training session to develop your IT skills.
