Televisualizing the Past:
Simon Schama and ‘A History of Britain,’ Ten Years On
Wednesday 8th December 2010 – 1pm–6.30pm

At this half-day conference, presentations will be given from those involved in the making of the series, including Writer and Presenter Simon Schama, Controller of BBC Two Janice Hadlow, BBC History Commissioner Martin Davidson, and the award-winning TV Producers Clare Beavan and Jamie Muir. Navigating the Past Seminar

The second of our twice-termly seminar will be led by John Schofield from the Department of Archaeology. IPUP Media Speaker Series: Alex Graham

One of the leading independent television producers in the world, Alex Graham’s credits include Who Do You Think You Are?, The 1940s House, and Oscar-winning documentary feature Man on Wire. His talk is entitled ‘Who Do We Think We Were: Reflections on Creating and Selling Historical Documentaries for TV in the Twenty-first Century.’

Packaging the Past Media Conference
19th May 2010 - IPUP Conference in partnership with York Museums Trust and the Archaeology Department will bring together media commissioners and producers, museum and heritage practitioners alongside academics to discuss "Packaging the Past: Communicating across museums, television, radio and the internet in a multi-platform era". Key speakers will be Martin Davidson, BBC Knowledge Commissioner for BBC History and Lucy Worsley, Chief Curator, Historic Royal Palaces. For more information see our events page.
Dan Snow: Keynote Media Speaker
11th May 2010 - IPUP Keynote Media Speaker Dan Snow will talk about his experience translating his history degree skills to production and presenter roles for TV history programmes, including his most recent BBC TV Series, “Empire of the Seas”. In collaboration with the History Competition at the History Department and Careers. All welcome, especially History, Archaeology and Art History students interested in media careers. York Cultural History Conference
22nd to 24th April 2010 - A three-day international conference will be held by our colleagues in the Department of History on the topic of 'femininities'. This will bring together leading international scholars to examine the state of the field in women's history, gender history and the history of sexuality. Roman York
1pm 30th March 2010 - IPUP will host cultural leaders for a lunch meeting to develop a project about Roman York.
People Changing Places
30th March 2010 - A day of discussions will be held concerning how to creatively engage communities in the regeneration of their towns and cities, with policymakers, built environment professionals, community leaders and local authorities. This day will be organised by Beam and held at the Bowland Auditorium in the Berrick Saul Building (directions). York 1190
22nd to 24th March 2010 - A conference will be held by our colleagues in the Centre for Medieval Studies on the topic of 'York 1190: Jews and Others in the Wake of Massacre'. This will examine one of the most scarring events in Anglo-Judaism, and to understand the York Massacre not just as a local event but one of a series of violent attacks on Jews across England between 1189 and 1190. 11th March 2010 - IPUP meeting to develop a working relationship with the Leeds-based agency, Audiences Yorkshire, and to discuss collaboration on audience research.
Living History Attractions
9th March 2010 - IPUP will host the CEO of Continuum to discuss potential research collaborations at their living history attractions, for example The Canterbury Tales and The Oxford Castle - Unlocked.
Bloomsbury Publishing
3rd March 2010 - IPUP has been invited to give a presentation at the newly-founded Bloomsbury Academic to explore new media publishing opportunities, with the Commissioning Editor, Frances Pinter, and the CEO, Jonathan Glasspool.
Martin Scott to UCL
1st March 2010 - Martin Scott has been an exellent Project Co-ordinator at IPUP and we wish him well in his new post at UCL, working with the European Research and Development Office.
English Heritage North East
19th February 2010 - IPUP will host English Heritage Marketing Director, Nicola Bexon, to discuss audience research and evaluation at sites in the North East Region of English Heritage, especially Cliffords Tower in central York, Belsay Hall, Housesteads Roman Fort at Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland. Pattern Industry
17th February 2010 - An exhibition will be opening at the Fine Arts Society, London, of collaborative works by Matthew Collings and Emma Biggs, featuring the 'Five Sisters'. WUN Relationship with New Zealand
17th February 2010 - IPUP's Director will be meeting with Rowland Weston from Waikato University, New Zealand to develop our WUN relationship. This relates to a new initiative for public history at Waikato called “The Public History Research Unit’ and synergies for research projects about heritage and identity. It is hoped that another IPUP/WUN graduate conference will be organised for 2011 to include students from York and Waikato.
DHG Progresses Research Projects at IPUP
IPUP will host the Co-Chair of the Diversity in Heritage Group to collaborate with policy makers and practitioners on a network project. The partnership is working to identify research needed by the sector to understand, develop and sustain audiences to museums, galleries and heritage sites. IPUP is co-ordinating the research partnerships and supporting the development of the Diversity in Heritage Group. For a report from a prior conference, please click here.

Navigating the Past: Seminar Extension
2nd February 2010 - Thanks to the fantastic discussions that arose at the 19th January seminar, IPUP's "Navigating the Past" series will be holding a second discussion group led by Geoffrey Wall (English) on the subject of 'Cultures of dissent: from biography to oral history'. The seminar will be held on 2nd February 1pm-2pm at IPUP's office in the Berrick Saul Building, room 120. For more information, including directions to the HRC, see our events page.
Audience Development Conference
27th and 28th January 2010 - IPUP's Director will participate in the discussions at the UK National Summit at Durham organized by Audiences UK, entitled ‘Need to Know. Audience Development in the UK. Open University: Heritage and Identity
26th January 2010 - IPUP's Director, Helen Weinstein, will give a presentation at the Open University’s ‘Heritage and Identity: Interfaculty Heritage Studies Research Group’. Helen’s paper sets out a proposal for a new collaborative research project based on the learning from her work with policy makers and practitioners conducted for ‘Diversifying Audiences’ as Co-Chair of the London Mayor’s Heritage Diversity Task Force, alongside developing the evidence and methodological challenges from the DCMS project ‘Taking Part’.

Minster Nights
7pm, 9th January 2010 - The Concert at the Minster is free this Saturday, forming part of an experimental series of events. IPUP will be conducting audience research about the interplay between the heritage space and the contemporary art and sound. For more information, see the site here. Also, the sound poem 'Minster Voices', about those who clean, maintain, fix and renovate the Minster will be looped all evening in the Zouche Chapel between 7pm and midnight. This piece is produced by Helen Weinstein and Jon Calver from Historyworks, and will soon be available at IPUP’s multimedia page.
