Afternoon Workshop on Commemoration

Tuesday 23 February 2016, 1.00PM to 5:30pm

Speaker(s): Gönül Bozoğlu (Humboldt University, Berlin) and Huw Halstead (York)

The first half of the workshop will be focused by two presentations exploring contrasting perspectives on the commemoration of a particular historical event – the 1453 Fall/Conquest of Constantinople:

Gönül Bozoğlu (Humboldt University, Berlin): Remembering the Conquest of Constantinople in Turkey: displays and visitor responses in the 1453 Panorama Museum

Huw Halstead (York): ‘The Third Fall’: How the Expatriated Greeks of Istanbul Commemorate the 1453 Fall of Constantinople and the 1955 Istanbul Riots

The second half of the workshop allows scope for further short presentations (c. 15 minutes) on aspects or cases of commemoration. If you have materials or ideas arising in your research that you would like to present as part of this, please let us know (geoff.cubitt@york.ac.uk). These can be very much ‘research in progress’ and can relate to any period, geographical area, or aspect of commemorative practice.

Location: The Treehouse (BS/104), Berrick Saul Building
