Our 60-second interview with David:

What do you do in the field of mental health?

I work as a researcher investigating the benefits and costs of different healthcare treatments. I was recently involved with a study looking at a behavioural intervention for people with co-morbid depression and diabetes in Pakistan and Bangladesh.

What do you find most rewarding and inspiring in this work?

I find it very interesting to develop methods to capture the interactions between mental health and other diseases using data. This is a complex and under researched topic.

What is the most challenging or complicated aspect of this work?

In my role I am often put on more than one research project. It can be challenging to balance the demands of different research projects in addition to administrative tasks and other responsibilities.

What impact do you hope your work is having- or can potentially have?

In my work on the behavioural intervention we presented our results to a trial development team. I hope that our analysis helped them to design the intervention and choose the outcomes measured in the clinical trial.

Could you share with us one piece of advice that you follow for your own mental health?

I am a long-term meditator (more then seven years of daily practice) and have been on a number of week-long retreats. Meditation is not a panacea and is not for everyone but for me it is a great source of joy, insight and exploration!
