Photographer Les Monaghan will talk about ten years of photographing through austerity, Brexit and other manufactured crises. His projects over the last ten years reflect how lives in the UK have been affected by government policies with a focus on those who are rarely represented in the media and the so-called national conversation. Each project is made collaboratively and allows participants a voice through texts to speak to audiences directly about their concerns. Thus we hear, and see, how we often share similar worries but also how those worries rarely correlate with the news agenda. Les’ work speaks to issues of social in- and exclusion, and surfaces issues of ownership over knowledge production that resonate with current debates in global development and the decolonisation of research.  You can see examples from Sociological Review here and his Relative Poverty project here. 

This event will be followed by a drinks reception from 5:30pm in the Environment Foyer.

The Peace Lab is supporting this event. The Peace Lab brings together research and teaching from across the University of York focussed on a broad range of issues related to peace, including conflict, security, migration, human rights, development, and social cohesion.
