Indigenous Land Struggles: Transregional Perspectives Across Asia and Africa
Event details
This first webinar in a series organised by the IGDC and the Centre for Asian Studies in Africa at the University of Pretoria, South Africa explores how indigenous people’s mobilizations for political recognition, electoral influence and social justice are entangled with struggles for land in various Asian and African countries. This webinar features a roundtable discussion with three expert speakers- Lway Mownt Noon, Myanmar-based indigenous activist and current CAHR fellow, Mbuso Nkosi, Lecturer in Sociology, University of Witwatersrand (South Africa) and Aashish Xaxa, Assistant Professor, Indian Institute of Technology (India). Each speaker will discuss these themes drawing on their recent and ongoing engagements with indigenous land struggles and its relationship with indigenous rights and social justice issues more broadly. This will be followed by Q&A and discussion. The event will be co-moderated by IGDC Deputy Director Saba Joshi and CASA Director, Alf Gunvald Nilsen.
