Event details

York Museums Trust (YMT) are keen to explore how research collaboration can help us to better understand and interpret the stories of Roman York and Northern Britain. The Roman period has enduring appeal to our audiences, forms an important part of the National Curriculum and will continue to form a key part of the Yorkshire Museum’s public offering going forward.
This will be in the form of permanent galleries, temporary exhibitions as well as major public programming, including the annual Roman Festival. Interpretation is based on our nationally-significant collections, drawn from the City of York as well as much of North Yorkshire. We are looking to develop interpretations of Roman York and the North that places people at the heart of our stories, particularly those overlooked in previous narratives.
During the workshop colleagues from YMT will introduce items and areas from their extensive Roman collections that may spark new collaborative research projects between YMT and UoY.
We aspire for all of our interpretation to be based on new research. We are keen to explore how we can better understand Roman Yorkshire in new ways, and are particularly interested in interdisciplinary approaches including but not limited to:
- Archaeological study
- Scientific analysis of collections
- Historical study
- Art historical analysis
We are also keen to explore creative, research-centred interpretation. Potential approaches here might include:
- Story-telling
- Creative Writing
- Artistic Responses
- Digital humanities
- Object-based learning
- Museum Studies
