Research

Research

A comparative study of vocational education and training in Chemistry for the British chemical industry for the post war 1945 to 1990 period by:-
(1) industrial apprentices trained part-time to degree level, as compared to

(2) full-time university Chemistry graduates employed directly into industry.

The research examines whether or not industrial degree apprentices were or were not disadvantaged compared to full time BSc graduates in the workplace over their whole career, with reference to career progression, salary level, and social class mobility. This study is based on annual salary surveys of the Chemical Society, the Royal Institute of Chemistry, and the Royal Society of Chemistry, but uniquely also by oral interviews of 75 participant chemists.
