My research seeks to understand the dynamics at play in moments of changing political allegiance in Gascony, during a period when the nobility was (ostensibly) forced to make an explicit choice between the Plantagenet and Valois monarchies. I propose to view these acts as vital elements of a long-term process in which authority was contested and negotiated by both subject and ruler, with relevance to our understanding of state-development, as well as important thematic subjects such as loyalty, identity, and borders.
