Joseph Gascoigne completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Oxford where he won the Herbert Prize for his thesis on class formation in colonial Antigua and Barbuda. He then moved to York to complete a Masters by Research under the supervision of Henrice Altink. His MRes examined the development of partisanship and polarisation in Antigua after 1967. His PhD maintains a focus on Antigua but shifts focus to the relationship between partisanship and corruption in the post-independence period. His other academic interests include political culture and practice in small island states, development in the global south, and postcolonialism. He is also the PhD representative to York's Interdisciplinary Global Development Centre and works on the "Citizenship Futures: The Politics of Hope" project, headed by Indrajit Roy.
