Thesis

Magic and Reputation in Seventeenth-Century England

Supervisor: Natasha Glaisyer

Research

My research focuses on the reputation of astrologers and practitioners of folk magic in seventeenth-century England. Using both archival and published sources my thesis will discuss how and to what ends astrologers, cunning folk, fortune tellers, and the like constructed their reputations and how these reputations were engaged with by others. Exploring these aspects of magical reputation will situate seventeenth-century popular magic in the contexts of credit and fame.

This project is funded by WRoCAH and the AHRC.
