Thesis

Invisible Hands: a study of Indian ayahs in Britain, 1870-1950

Supervisor: Henrice Altink

Research

A study of Indian ayahs in Britain, looking at how they experienced the migration process from application through to return. Within this, I will look at how they were perceived and received by various elements of British society and how these perceptions shaped their experiences.

My broader research interests include the multicultural history of Victorian/Edwardian Britain, the migrant labour market in Victorian/Edwardian London, master/servant relationships in the British Raj, and uncovering the historically 'invisible' presence of South Asians in Britain, especially women.
