The Department of History has placed 11th in the Guardian University Guide 2024 for the subject of history. The ranking recognises the quality of our courses, and the experiences and opportunities they provide to our students.

Our Head of Department Professor Laura Stewart said: “This great result is testament not only to the commitment of our teaching and support staff, but also to the hard work and enthusiasm of York History students. We are particularly pleased to see that over 98% of our first years continue into their second year - placing York 5th overall for continuation. At York, we combine intellectually stretching courses with supported learning, to get the very best out of all our students, whatever their background”.

The Guardian University Guide is published annually to help students choose a university course. It ranks UK universities by undergraduate degree subjects in metrics such as student satisfaction, continuation, spend per student and graduate outcomes.
