Culture and Health Webinar Calendar 2019 Launched

2019 sees the launch of the latest series of webinars intended to use the cultural contexts and history of health to help the global health community respond to present-day challenges. 2019’s Culture and Health webinar series will bring together interdisciplinary panels of academics and policy-makers to examine the historical and cultural contexts of current global health issues. All webinars will be live- streamed, meaning that audiences will be able to watch online, ask questions and join the discussion remotely.

The first seminar, ‘Culture and health: Antibiotic resistance: a cultural contexts approach to addressing a global health challenge’ takes place on 12 February 2019 at the University of Exeter. Subsequent seminars will be held at the University of York, and the WHO Regional Office for Europe.

The Culture and Health webinar series builds on the success of the Global Health Histories (GHH) seminars, which are a collaboration between the Centre for Global Health Histories and WHO. Launched in 2004, the GHH series, which comprises more than 100 seminars, has provided a space to initiate conversations on topical health issues across the traditional divides of academic, United Nations, professional and public spheres.

Three events will take place at the University of York:

‘Air pollution: Local contexts, universal effects’ (6 March 2019)

‘Safety and Society: Cycle helmet debates’ (4 June 2019)

‘200 million lives saved: Smallpox eradication 40 years on’ (5 November 2019)

The series is a collaboration between the WHO Regional Office for Europe’s Cultural Contexts of Health project and two WHO collaborating centres, at the University of York and University of Exeter, supported by the Wellcome Trust.
