Masters Programme Awards Success

We are pleased to report that the University of York’s MA in Medical History and Humanities has been awarded a Wellcome Trust Masters Programme Award in Humanities and Social Science. The Masters Programme Awards in Humanities and Social Science scheme supports Masters programmes to train humanities and social science researchers in any area of health. The award will support three studentships over the course of three years.

The success of the bid, led by Dr Alexander Medcalf on behalf of the Departments of History and English and Related Literature, reflects the expertise and enthusiasm of a range of scholars working based at York.

The MA in Medical History and Humanities is an exciting interdisciplinary course jointly run by the Departments of History and English and Related Literature. It is also open to people with backgrounds in other humanities disciplines, as well as those with social science, science and public health backgrounds with an interest in the medical humanities.

Professor Lawrence Black, (Head of the Department of History) said, "We are delighted and honoured that the Wellcome Trust have funded these studentships for the MA in Medical Humanities and History MA. This will sustain the growth of this superb MA program at York."

Professor Helen Smith (Head of the Department of English and Related Literature), concurred: “We're delighted to have the support of the Wellcome Trust for our wide-ranging and interdisciplinary MA in Medical History and Humanities. These bursaries will allow the most talented students from all over the world, and from all walks of life, to benefit from an exciting programme of study, and a host of associated opportunities.
