Christiane Matt

Christiane Matt is a second year PhD candidate working under the supervision of Professor Helen Hills. Her research explores the relationship between architecture and the body with regards to the supposed origins or founding myths of architecture from circa 1450 up to 1994. In particular, her thesis interrogates concepts of gender and sexual difference in relation to the 'birth' of architecture or in relation to the originary bodies of architecture. Her broader research interests include the relationships between image and text, feminist and queer theory as well as historiography. Christiane completed a BA in History of Art with German literature at the University of Cologne and the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and obtained a MA in History of Art from the University of York before rejoining the History of Art department at York in 2019 to undertake her PhD.
