History of Art, Architecture and Design at York ranks 8th in the Times and Sunday Times University Guide 2025

The Department of History of Art has placed 8th in the Times and Sunday Times University Guide 2025 for the subjects of history of art, architecture and design. The ranking recognises the quality of our courses, and the experiences and opportunities they provide to our students.

Our Head of Department, Professor Michael White said: “We are dedicated to teaching and believe that our programmes not only bring the art of the past and present to life but prepare our students for all kinds of experiences to follow.  I am delighted that is being recognised in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025. We look forward to welcoming our next cohort of new students to history of art at York!”.

The Times and Sunday Times University Guide is published annually to help students choose a university course. It ranks UK universities by undergraduate degree subjects in metrics such as student satisfaction, continuation, spend per student and graduate outcomes.

York’s overall position

York ranked in the UK top 10 in 11 subject areas assessed by the guide.

  • Drama, Dance and Cinematics - 7th
  • French - 10th

  • Iberian Languages - 9th
  • Linguistics - 5th

  • Psychology - =8th

A further nine subjects ranked in the top 20.
