PhD Thesis Published as New Online Resource
PhD Graduate Dr Julie Ann Whyman is publishing her thesis as a new, open-to-all website!
With her newly launched website www.pre-raphaeliteflowers.com, Julie aims to share her research swiftly, easily and for free. She is hoping to encourage a general conversation around the language of flowers, to raise awareness of the issues and solutions, and perhaps to change our minds about Pre-Raphaelite flowers – their meaning, their function and their symbolism. She shares a simplified methodology for assessing the role of flowers in paintings to bring a consistent approach that is botanically accurate and historically sound. The website is proving to be very popular, with more than 500 visitors from 28 countries making 1500 visits in the first week!
Julie comments, "There is clearly worldwide interest in the subject and it feels good to be able to share my research on-line so that everyone can access it, regardless of geographical location or access to a library. The feedback has been encouraging and I am really pleased that I made the decision to make such an immediate impact with my work."
Julie completed her dissertation on “Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s Language of Flowers” under the supervision of Professor Elizabeth Prettejohn in 2019.
