Monday 20 November 2023, 3.00PM to June 2024
The first exhibition of Islamic art ever held in York opened at the Borthwick Institute in the University Library on November 20th. The launch event was very well attended, with a speech by the Vice Chancellor and a wide range of people from within and beyond the university present.
Curated by Dr Richard McClary and Helena Cox, the exhibition is open until June 2024, is free to access, and open to all. Through three main themes a range of Islamic art from Spain to India and spanning over a 1000 years tells the story of the emergence of the discipline, the use of ceramics, and the power of the Arabic script in Islamic societies.
The exhibition celebrates the launch of the new Arts of Islamic Worlds MA, and the donation of a large number of books to the library by Professor Robert Hillenbrand. It has already been used in teaching several different modules across the department, and please pop in and take a look whenever you get a chance!
Location: Borthwick Archives in the main Library building
