Stained Glass Conservation in Context: The Bigger Picture

MA in Stained Glass Conservation and Heritage Management: Spring Master-Class

Stained glass conservation is never conducted in a technical or intellectual vacuum. Stained glass is often only part of a complex of programme of work in which the challenges and requirements of other media and other disciplines need to be taken into account. In some cases, the needs of the natural world impact on the conservation of the architectural fabric. The fuller understanding of the intellectual and cultural context in which a glazing scheme was conceived and made, will transform our perspectives of the significance of a window and influence the conservation concept. Finally, all conservators need to be up to date with the technological developments in their field in order to keep their ‘tool box’ well stocked. This year’s master-class will bring together experts and researchers working in complex contexts in which media, materials, disciplines and priorities require careful balancing in order to achieve success.
