The CASPER research programme directly targets depression by identifying older people with symptoms of depression or low mood and offering brief, evidence-based psychological treatments.
Dr Dean McMillan, co-investigator on the CASPER Research Programme, helped to design the treatments offered. He points out:
“Depression is very common in older people and often goes untreated. People sometimes see unhappiness and clinical depression as an inevitable consequence of growing old. This is unfortunate as in many cases effective treatments exist. In the CASPER project we have developed various treatments to directly target depression in older people.”
If you are concerned about depression in later life, your own well-being or that of a family member or close friend, this Age UK leaflet (PDF , 72kb) may help.
