Phase 1 of the programme of work

While there are some data on the national pattern of alcohol and substance misuse issues in the acute sector, local data are more difficult to collate.

The first phase of the project seeks to understand the patterns of alcohol and drug related hospital admissions and patterns of care in Leeds and the interventions which may improve the health of these users in this setting. This first stage of the project seeks to combine local data with the international evidence base in order to determine the key gaps in our knowledge.

A number of reviews, analyses and exploratory studies have been completed (or currently near completion) in Phase 1:

  • a review of methods of screening, assessment and feedback within an acute hospital setting
  • an analysis of the patterns of hospital related admissions for Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust
  • qualitative studies looking at the current patterns of care for patients with alcohol and drug related hospital admissions for LTHT, as well as patient and care staff interactions
  • review of alcohol and illicit drug interventions that are effective in acute hospital settings
  • providing training sessions for hospital staff to increase identification and appropriate referrals of problem drinkers.
