Biography
After graduating from medical school, Tonya worked as a general practitioner and later in an A&E department. She has continued her studies, completing an MSc in Health Research at the University of York (2023), then joined York Trials Unit in September 2023. Tonya is currently completing a full-time PhD in the Department of Health Sciences.
Her PhD project focuses on quantitative analysis methods for exploring inclusion of under-served communities in clinical trials. The project is being completed under the supervision of Professors Catherine Hewitt and Catriona McDaid.

- DIADEM - Developing and evaluating an adapted behavioural activation intervention for people with depression and diabetes in South Asia
- EXTRA-CECI
- MODS – A programme aiming to develop and evaluate an intervention to improve physical and psychological functioning in older adults with long-term physical health conditions and low mood or depression
- OPAL2 - A multi-centre RCT comparing the OPAL occupational support programme with usual care on the time to return-to-work in patients undergoing elective hip or knee replacement surgery.
- SCOOTT - A multi-centre, superiority and non-inferiority three-arm RCT to assess the clinical and cost effectiveness of treating arthritis of the base of the thumb, with or without surgery and to determine the clinical and cost effectiveness of trapeziectomy versus base of thumb joint replacement.
