Carole graduated in 1997 and completed an MSc award at the University of Huddersfield in 2005. She currently has a dual role as a Children’s Diabetes Nurse Specialist at Leeds and as a lecturer in diabetes at the University of York, co-leading the CYP diabetes module and Insulin pump therapy modules with Anne Phillips.
Carole’s main clinical interests are in intensive diabetes management particularly insulin pump therapy, continuous glucose monitoring and psycho-educational interventions. She is the main contributor to the first nationally available Insulin pump workbook for families which achieved the Gold award at the Quality in Care (QiC) awards 2011 and a Vice Chancellor Silver award at the University of York.
Carole has presented at key national diabetes conferences including Diabetes UK Annual Professional Conference, BSPED (British Society for Paediatric Endocrinologists and Diabetologists), National Paediatric Diabetes Symposium and Lilly’s National Paediatric Diabetes Team conference. She has also contributed to books on insulin pump therapy, written articles for a range of journals and also receives regular invitations to review articles as well as being an editorial board member for diabetes related journals.
She has been involved in a year-long investigation into the state of diabetes education, learning and support in the UK as part of an All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG). Its report was submitted to the Department of Health and disseminated among Clinical Commissioning Groups.
She joined the RCN CYP Diabetes community in 2010 and has been actively involved in co-writing “CYP with diabetes – RCN guidance for newly appointed nurse specialists” and the RCN endorsed “Streetwise” information leaflets for young people during transition. More recently Carole contributed to the development of the RCN "Specialist and advanced children and young people's nursing practice in contemporary healthcare: guidance for nurses and commissioners" (2014) and its subsequent development at RCN congress.
Carole was recently part of a team who won a 2013 QIC Award for Best Improvement Programme for Children and Young People. This is in relation to work in collaboration with Leeds Children's Hospital around Children and Young Persons Diabetes services.
These modules have been developed in collaboration with the Children's Diabetes Specialist teams in Leeds NHS Trusts.
