Dr Uphoff will be taking part in an international workshop in Belo Horizonte, Brazil in August. The workshop brings together early career researchers from the UK and Brazil to discuss trends in economic development from Brazil and the UK, and to examine the relationships between economic growth, poverty, inequality and welfare reforms.
A debate will focus on “the blunt hypothesis that, for a few people to get filthy rich, many more must get filthy poor”. Noortje will bring the health inequalities perspective to the workshop and afterwards she will work with others to produce a book chapter and explore the scope for establishing a research programme around this topic.
Noortje said: “I am so grateful for this opportunity from the Newton Fund. It gives me a chance to promote research on health inequalities among researchers from many different disciplines. Brazil does not only offer an exciting adventure but a very interesting case study on inclusive economic growth.”
