A new analysis by Diabetes UK recently revealed that diabetes cases have increased by 60% in the past decade. The charity stated that more than 3.3 million people have some form of the condition and called for the NHS to improve care for patients and for greater efforts to prevent diabetes.
Around 90% of cases are type 2 diabetes, which is closely linked to diet and obesity, whereas those with type 1 generally develop it in childhood and are unable to produce the hormone insulin to control blood sugar levels.
Talking on BBC Radio 5 live, Anne stated that type one diabetes is also on the increase but that diabetes prevention is very much focused towards type two diabetes as this is something that we have some evidence that we can do something about, through diet and lifestyle changes.
