Posted on 19 November 2015

Exciting course teaches students about advances in glucose monitoring and improving diabetes care through technology

Students including consultants, specialist nurses and dietitians from child and adult diabetes services across the Yorkshire region will learn about advances in glucose monitoring and improving diabetes care through technology as part of a new and innovative Advancing Technologies in Diabetes Care: The Next Steps course which has started in the department.

It will prepare practitioners for a closed loop system which will act as an artificial pancreas and is being researched for people with Type 1 diabetes.

Anne Phillips, Senior Lecturer in Diabetes, said: “This is such an exciting time for children, young people and adults with diabetes and their diabetes specialist teams. We were delighted to have many eminent leaders in diabetes and insulin pump therapy presenting including Professor Rudy Bilous, Consultant Diabetologist from South Tees NHS Trust and Honorary Professor at Newcastle University, who spoke about using insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring in special and complex situations within diabetes care. Professor Bilous previously worked at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust when insulin pump therapy was introduced and has been a key figure in bringing insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring into every day practice.”
