Health Sciences Nursing students celebrate another success, this time in the form of second year nursing student, Amy Bascombe, who has swept the board at the recent York Students’ Union award ceremony. Amy was nominated in two categories; Student Representative of the Year and Campaign of the Year for her work in highlighting the financial hardships faced by nursing students only receiving three student loan payments. Amy has been successful in bringing the fight to a national stage and has raised it to be an item firmly on the agenda of the NUS. If successful, her campaign will help approximately 91,000 students on similar courses to her own around the country.
Amy is a second year, adult nursing student, who juggles studying with being a single parent. She says, “I was genuinely surprised to be nominated for student representative of the year and campaign of the year. It’s been an honour to represent my cohort. I believe we are some of the most dedicated, passionate, hard-working students in the country. We study hard and work harder. Because of this I know we are becoming competent, compassionate professional nurses. I’m grateful for the opportunity and thrilled to have won for me, fellow students, and for our department!”
Amy’s supervisor, Karen Spilsbury, writes of her success, “I am delighted to hear of Amy’s achievements in the YUSU awards. Amy works incredibly hard at her studies but also shows great commitment, energy and enthusiasm for wider activities to support nursing students. The areas of work for which Amy won these two awards are really important, at both University and national level. She absolutely deserves to have her hard work recognised. On behalf of staff and students in the Department of Health Sciences I would like to congratulate her and thank her. I am sure Amy will go on to provide a strong voice and leadership for future nurses.
