Out of sight, out of mind? Promoting the health of residents in UK care homes

Friday 27 September 2013, 10.00AM to 4:00pm

Speaker(s): Professor Ngaire Kerse, University of Auckland, Professor Claire Goodman, University of Hertfordshire, Professor Martin Green, Chief Executive English Community Care Association, Professor Julienne Meyer, City University.

Around half a million older adults live in UK care homes. With high levels of chronic disease, frailty and dementia, they are one of the most challenging client groups to be cared for by health and social services. Until recently, important questions about the welfare of this population have not attracted the widespread attention they deserve. Do we know enough about care home residents’ health needs and how best to organise health and social care services to promote equitable outcomes in long term care? Are there gaps in the current research that are not being addressed?

The Department of Health Sciences and Hull York Medical School are hosting a one day conference to bring together researchers, representatives of the care home industry and service commissioners, to share current experiences and explore ideas on how future research could help to improve the health and wellbeing of residents, and promote equitable outcomes.
