Sam is a Research Fellow/Trial Manager based at York Trials Unit, currently managing BioDrive AFS, BATH-OUT-2, SCEPTRE and PERISCOPE trials.
Sam previously managed the SPACES programme of research which aims to co-produce an intervention to support people with severe mental ill health to take part in physical activity.
Prior to this, Sam coordinated a number of large national multi-centre trials, including the Covid-19 Urgent Public Health Study BASIL (Behavioural Activation in Social Isolation) which aimed to rapidly develop a feasible, acceptable, clinical and cost-effective brief psychological intervention (behavioural activation) to improve depression and loneliness in older adults with physical-mental multi-morbidity during isolation.
Sam is an experienced mixed methods health researcher, who joined the University of York in 2013. Sam spent eighteen months as a trial/study support officer in the Mental Health and Addiction Research Group before completing a PhD exploring the sexual health and behaviour of people with severe mental illness. Part way through her PhD Sam joined the York Trials Unit and Statistics research group and spent 4 years working as Research Fellow (trial coordinator).
Prior to working at the University, she has worked in a variety of clinical mental health settings including acute, forensic, child and adolescent and older adult’s services.
Sam has a keen interest in common mental health problems and physical comorbidity, severe mental illness and physical comorbidity, clinical trials, systematic reviews and qualitative methods.
Sam is able to supervise Masters and PhD projects with a broad focus on mental health problems and physical health. Specific areas of interest include interventions (both physical and psychological) to improve the health and wellbeing of people with severe mental illness.
